No label. No studio. No team of 50. Just one creative director who decided to build a world and refused to stop.
What Does "Indie Anime Music" Actually Look Like?
When people think of anime music, they think of studios, label-backed artists, and production committees with seven-figure budgets. They don't think of a single creative director overseeing composition, writing, production, and publishing independently.
But that's exactly what StarlitTunes is.
Every song in the StarlitTunes catalog is originally composed. Not a cover, not a remix, not a translation of an existing J-Pop track. Over 30 original tracks across multiple albums and languages, all guided by a single creative vision from creative director Ethan Wu.
The Catalog
StarlitTunes isn't a one-album project. It's a growing catalog that spans genres, languages, and stories:
- Wings of Fate: three English tracks ("Repentance," "The Peace before the Storm," "The Forgotten Calling") and a Japanese version of PBTS, each serving as the soundtrack to a chapter of the dark fantasy novel
- Japanese-language singles: "Deafening Silence," "Your Warmth," "Same Old Street," "Dancing in the Rain," and "Crown of Thorns," original J-Pop tracks sung in Japanese
- Chronicles of the Benevolent Ruler: a 10-track English concept album tracing an epic arc from childhood bliss through tragedy, growth, betrayal, divine intervention, and kingship
- Starlit Winter: a 10-track English holiday album bringing seasonal warmth to the StarlitTunes sound
- "Fire Flower": an English worship single
- "Pieces of a Dream": an English ballad
The Process: From Story to Song to Animation
Here's how a StarlitTunes track comes to life:
1. The Story Comes First
For Wings of Fate tracks, every song begins with a chapter of the novel. The emotional arc of the prose (the tension, the revelation, the heartbreak) becomes the blueprint for the music. The song doesn't just accompany the chapter. It is the chapter, compressed into four minutes of sound. For standalone albums like Chronicles of the Benevolent Ruler, the narrative arc shapes the entire album sequence.
2. Composition and Production
The music blends J-Pop vocal melodies with orchestral instrumentation: strings, piano, cinematic percussion. Think anime opening meets film score. All produced independently, aiming for the same emotional impact as music from professional anime studios.
3. Hand-Drawn Animation
Wings of Fate tracks each get their own hand-drawn anime music video. These aren't AI-generated or template-based. Artist Harry Handdrawn creates every frame by hand, bringing key scenes from the novel to life with traditional animation techniques.
The Chapter 1 animation, "The Peace before the Storm," has reached over 2.7 million views on YouTube. Each frame is a testament to what independent creators can achieve when the art comes first.
4. Release Across All Platforms
Every song is distributed to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and all major streaming platforms. MP3 downloads and sheet music are available on the StarlitTunes store.
Why Go Independent?
The honest answer: because no label would greenlight this project.
A fantasy novel that's also a multi-album catalog that's also an anime? With both English and Japanese tracks? Created by a Big 4-trained accountant turned creative director with no music industry connections?
No pitch deck in the world makes that sound like a safe bet.
Going independent means total creative control. Every note, every word, every frame reflects a single vision. It also means slower, harder, and lonelier. But for a project that's fundamentally about choosing an imperfect path over a safe one, independence isn't a limitation. It's the point.
